Artist Statement - Achilles Lavidis
Like Odysseus, I was uprooted from the utopia of my childhood and cast into foreign terrain—an eternal voyager in search of home. This mythic lens defines my creative journey. I draw from Greek mythology, Indigenous spirituality, biblical parables, and the theatrical truths of Shakespeare to explore the timeless cycles of loss, transformation, and belonging.
My first language was Modern Greek. My second, Egyptian Arabic—a language I lost while trying to learn English after immigrating to Australia. Yet Arabic, with its lyrical, flowing script, shaped how I see the world. It was my first experience of drawing—line as language, mark as meaning. Before I could write in English, I could draw. That early fluency led me to become a skilled draftsman, grounding my practice in strong line work and expressive form.
I work primarily with pencil, ink, watercolor, and acrylic—mediums that allow both precision and spontaneity. My process is intuitive and instinctive, rooted in fundamentals but open to transformation. I often move freely between representation and abstraction, and I happily sail straight into the emotional landscapes of Abstract Expressionism when the work demands it. There, in the rawness of gesture and color, I find a kind of truth that language cannot hold.
Travel has also shaped my sensibility. In addition to formative spiritual retreats to Mount Athos in Greece and the deserts of central Australia—especially Uluru and Kata Tjuta—I have journeyed extensively throughout Europe, Japan, and South America. These encounters with vastly different cultures, geographies, and mythologies continue to influence the textures, rhythms, and emotional layers of my work.
Ultimately, I create to bridge worlds—between the visible and the invisible, the ancient and the present, the personal and the mythic. My art seeks to awaken what lies beneath language: a space where memory, mark, and spirit converge.
Biography
Artist Bio – Achilles Lavidis
- Achilles Lavidis is an Australian citizen currently living in Manhattan, New York. His career spans architecture, visual art, design, illustration, acting, writing, and directing for both theatre and film—forming a richly layered creative practice.
- Born in Ismailia, Egypt, to Greek parents, Lavidis immigrated to Sydney, Australia, at the age of eight. A defining moment came in fifth grade, when his teacher displayed one of his paintings in front of the class. It was then he recognized his gift for the visual arts—the only question was which discipline to pursue.
- He chose architecture as a compromise between the artistic and the practical, and he quickly excelled in design and visual presentation. After completing his studies, he joined Philip Cox and Partners Architects, where he worked on the design and construction of Yulara—a self-sustaining township near Uluru in the Northern Territory. This experience introduced him to the profound spirituality of Australia’s Red Centre, a motif that would continue to shape his artistic vision.
- From 1982 to 1985, Lavidis taught drawing to interior design students at the University of Technology in Sydney. He later studied acting at the Drama Studio (1986–1988), and in 1991, he completed a postgraduate film program in Melbourne. In 1993, he toured with the Bell Shakespeare Company as a repertory actor, bringing classical theatre to audiences across Australia.
- In 1994, Lavidis relocated to New York City. From 2007 to 2010, he served as a guest critic at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Since 2020, he has focused intensely on painting—creating large-format works on canvas and paper. His ongoing series Subwaylines, shared on Instagram, features intimate life-drawing portraits of fellow passengers during his daily subway commutes.
- Now, as he prepares for his first solo art exhibition, Achilles Lavidis reflects on his three decades in New York. Soon, he will return to Australia—bringing full circle a creative journey that has traversed continents, mediums, and spiritual landscapes.
